The Value of Connection Through Couples Yoga
Recently one of my students asked if I had ever taught Couples Yoga. My answer was, “No, but there has to be a first for everything”. We set the date and got the ball rolling. This really got me thinking about how little we connect with our partners as a society.
Today’s world seems to value being busy. Your success is gauged by how much you can get done in the shortest amount of time, how much money you can make, how well you market yourself with social media. This type of thinking doesn’t leave much room for relationships.
Where do we place the value of our relationships? Often, they come last, and it’s not because we intend it to be that way; it just happens. And before we know it, we end up with a lifelong roommate who we might see in passing, or we see at the end of the day when we are too exhausted to even talk.
I’m married with two kids; there are days my husband and I just nod, do the kid handoff, and that may be it for the day. Mornings are hectic, evenings are exhausting. Even if you don’t have kids, life is just busy.
I felt really honored to be able to create a sacred space for couples to connect without disruptions. To create a space where they felt safe to take a moment and really look into one another, past the disagreements, the stress of life, and the worry over money. To see the person they fell in love with, to see their light, the part of them that sings to their soul. Sometimes that gets buried so deep we forget it’s there.
For couples yoga, you are required to slow down, communicate, and trust one another through breath, movement, and yoga poses. It brings you back to a place of simplicity - just you and your partner. For this particular class, we did heart openers and assisted one another with warrior poses, hip stretches, and a little massage before relaxation.
I could see and feel the energy in class, the couples working with one another, laughing, giggling, remembering what it’s like to be a couple. I felt a wonderful connection with my own husband, who so sweetly volunteered to help me demonstrate the poses.
There was a shift in energy between everyone that was priceless. I feel so grateful to have been asked to teach this class. I feel grateful every day for the blessings my students bring to me. Once again, I am opening my heart to possibilities - and the universe’s answers.
f you haven’t taken a couples class please look into it. Invest in your relationship with your partner. Take a few hours to connect, to communicate. It can make all the difference in the world.
PS~ I had to take a picture of Mike (my hubby) and I doing yoga because I got so caught up in the energy of class, I completely forgot to take out my camera. So again Mike Ciucci, I owe you one 🙂
